How a sofa writes a love story
Sometimes, a single glance through a shop window can change everything. That's what happened to Johnny Sørensen in the late 1990s when he discovered an unusually colorful, round sofa in Amsterdam. It was extravagant, soft, inviting—and so different from anything he had seen before. He bought it. Today, almost three decades later, that first Bretz sofa still stands in the basement of his house in Gentofte near Copenhagen. A piece of furniture? Much more than that. A symbol of a lifestyle—and the beginning of a true passion.
A home full of character: Johnny now lives surrounded by Bretz furniture together with his wife Elize Dimare. Nine sofas are spread throughout their stylish villa, five of them on the upper floor alone. Colors, shapes, materials - nothing is left to chance. Each piece tells a story and has been carefully selected. The couple is convinced that furniture influences how we feel—and how we live. It should inspire, embrace, and delight.

From buying a vacation to an idea with heart
In 2018, while on vacation in Hamburg, the couple discovered another Bretz store. Naturally, they went inside and didn't leave empty-handed. But this time, it wasn't just a sofa – an idea was born. Why wasn't this brand available in Denmark? And wouldn't it be wonderful to make this unique aesthetic accessible to other Scandinavians?
What initially seemed like a passionate impulse became reality: in November 2024, Elize and Johnny opened the first Bretz flagship store in Palægade, in the heart of Copenhagen. For all those who long for something extraordinary.

A place to immerse yourself
When you walk into the showroom, you quickly realize that it's not about selling. It's about experiencing. The sofas aren't lined up like in a traditional furniture store—they invite you to sit down. And then something happens. People sit down—carefully, curiously. Some lean back right away and breathe a sigh of relief. It's as if the furniture is saying, “Glad you're here.” Make yourself comfortable. You can just be yourself.
“It's fascinating every time,” says Elize. “Some people rush straight to their favorite piece. Others need a moment to pluck up the courage. But almost everyone blossoms when they sit down. It's like a little transformation.”
